WHAT WE COMMIT TO

ADVANCING IN SUSTAINABILITY ON BEHALF OF OUR MEMBERS

As Stonehouse approaches its 26th year in business, there is widespread recognition that we, as humans, are having an impact on our planet, the people who live on it and how we drive our business to be profitable. This Triple Bottom Line (TBL) of people, planet and profit is often at odds with how we earn a living and consume goods and services to both survive and thrive.

In addition, in a global economy, how we source and supply the 36,000 products that our customers benefit from across our member outlets requires us to be conscious of our sourcing strategies such that we maximize the benefits we deliver while minimizing our impacts and risks. Stonehouse has developed a set of Sustainability principles aligned to our values.

As our guiding compass, we have adapted our Sustainability approach in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (The UN SDGs). We have specifically aligned to SDGs that we believe we can contribute to as part of our business values and group-wide operations. We review our progress against the SDGs on an annual basis in line with our sustainability strategy.

AGILITY

  • All things being equal, where a more sustainable option is available to us, we will adapt and pursue it in favour of alternates, e.g. low impact energy and transport.
  • Investigate and where appropriate adopt sustainable procurement practises.

GROWTH

  • Set credible ESG goals and measure them in appropriate ways.
  • Assess our impacts across our value chain and where appropriate, act upon them. In doing so, we integrate sustainability into our risk management.
  • Review the sustainability of our products and provide sustainable options for our customers.

PROGRESS TO DATE

Stonehouse Marketing formalised it Sustainability journey in 2024 with a major focus on our vision, policies and strategy. In 2025 we baselined our Scope 1 and Scope 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and carried out a hotspot analysis on our own brand products. This baseline enabled us to refocus our strategy with a view to tracking progress into 2026. In 2026, we will build on our baseline reporting and seek to extend our analysis to Scope 3.

OUR SUPPLY CHAIN

A key part of our strategy moving forward is engagement with our upstream and downstream suppliers. In this regard we will adopt a risk-based, standards-aligned approach across all tiers of the supply chain, anchored in due diligence frameworks such as the OECD Due Diligence Guidance and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. In addition, we will apply a proportionately deeper control for own brands, identify potentially high-risk categories (e.g., fresh food, apparel, imports from high-risk geographies), and scalable controls for the long tail of branded SKUs. In all cases, we will work with our suppliers, aligned to UN SDG #17 – Partnership for the goals. We are conscious that our supply chains can be wide and varied, and in this regard, we work closely with our suppliers to ensure: –

  • Codes of Conduct: Implement a Supplier Code aligned to International Labour Organization conventions (no forced/child labour, freedom of association, fair wages/hours, non-discrimination, health & safety).
  • Risk-Based Due Diligence: Mapping supply chains for our own-brand and critical categories (e.g. under the EUDR); screen geographies and sectors for elevated risk; require higher assurance (audits/certifications) where risk is material.
  • Ethical Trading & Transparency: Provide clear product information (origin, certifications), avoid misleading claims, and ensure marketing integrity.
